Ethically-Aligned Digital Business Intelligence for MSMEs: Integrating Ethics, Data, and Technology for Sustainable Business Models

MSMEs are the backbone of Indonesia’s economy, yet in the digital era they still face challenges of fragmented data, limited digital literacy, and increasing consumer privacy concerns. This study aims to design an Ethically-Aligned Business Intelligence (E-BI) framework, a simplified BI model embedding ethical principles in data management. The research adopts Design Science Research (DSR) with six stages: problem identification, objective definition, artifact design, demonstration, evaluation, and communication. Data are drawn from academic literature, policy reports, and both national and international regulations. Results produce a five-layer E-BI framework: data integration, minimalist ETL, simple data mart, core KPI dashboard, and ethical controls (RBAC, audit logs, data retention). Conceptual testing was conducted in culinary, fashion, and service MSMEs. Findings indicate sectoral differences in KPI needs but common emphasis on ethical governance. This paper contributes theoretically and practically, providing a blueprint for sustainable BI adoption in Indonesian MSMEs.
